Onna Bugeisha

Updated: Nov 3, 2024

Onna Bugeisha were female warriors who belonged to the samurai class in feudal Japan. These women were trained in the use of weapons such as the naginata (a Japanese spear) and the tanto (a dagger), and were tasked with protecting their home and families in times of war. Unlike traditional depictions of women in feudal Japanese society, Onna Bugeisha were seen as equally capable and dangerous as male warriors.

This tattoo, therefore, contains deep cultural and historical symbolism that resonates with the figure of the Onna Bugeisha, highlighting the strength and independence of the woman depicted.
